I see countless comments cheering for the Houthis, calling them heroes for targeting Israeli civilians in the middle of the night. But do you support how they treat their own people? Their women? Since 2014, the Houthis have abducted, tortured, and brutalized thousands of women, viewing them as a threat to be controlled, isolated, and erased from public life. Women are banned from traveling without a male guardian, cannot work, use a phone, or wear makeup. They are forbidden from dining in restaurants without a marriage contract, barred from public parks and even told what colors they can wear. Under Houthi rule, over 1,700 women have been abducted, subjected to torture, sexual assault, and harassment, simply for political, media, or human rights activism. Take Entisar Al-Hammadi, an artist kidnapped in 2021. Her captors offered her release if she helped entrap their enemies using “sex and drugs.” She was tortured, forced into a virginity test, sentenced to five years in prison, and placed in solitary confinement. She attempted suicide multiple times. Other women have been sentenced to death for criticizing the group or communicating with other organizations. Still think the Houthis are heroes?
