Hersh Goldberg-Polin was a hostage advocate before he ever was one. At an event last week in Toronto, Jon Polin revealed that Hersh z”l often questioned why more people weren’t speaking up about Avera Mengistu, who had been held captive in Gaza for over a decade. Hersh would attend rallies, with no more than five others on the side of the highway, calling to bring Avera home. Hersh will never know that Avera Mengistu was finally released after 3,821 days in captivity, and he will never know how badly we fought to see him come home, too. Hersh Goldberg-Polin was the best of humanity.
