In the early 20th-century Russian Empire, Jews knew to stay indoors during Orthodox holidays, weddings, or other celebrations marked by heavy drinking. They knew to hide, because once the drinking started, mobs would storm Jewish homes, shoot the men, and rape the women. Simply for fun. Today, a hundred years later, a drunk man was found climbing a synagogue in France and tearing down the Israeli flag. Just days earlier, also in France, three drunk men assaulted an elderly Jewish man in broad daylight, on the street. Probably for fun, too. When we say, “It’s happening again,” believe us.
