Re’em Bohbot turns five today. It’s his second birthday without his father, Elkana, who is still being held hostage in Hamas’s terror tunnels. Re’em should be blowing out his candles at home, sitting on his father’s lap, not standing in Hostages Square, fighting for his father’s release. Former hostage Ohad Ben Ami shared with Rivka, Elkana’s wife, that last year, Elkana managed to find a small piece of chocolate. He saved it for weeks, just so he could mark Re’em’s birthday on June 7, 2024. This is how a father celebrated his son’s birthday, alone, in a tunnel. Re’em is only five, he needs his father.
