It’s been part of the anti-Israel left’s conceptual universe for decades. I’ve seen Soviet literature aimed at the global left talking about “genocide in Gaza” as far back as 1969. In 1982, British leftist press claimed Israel was conducting a genocide in Lebanon. Has nothing to do with what’s actually happening on the ground: they just pull out the strongest accusations they have in their arsenal and deploy them as needed.

Who coordinated the "genocide in Gaza" lie so early on? Using the custom time range on Google, look at the results for "genocide in Gaza" during the week after Saturday, October 7, 2023. On Friday October 13, while ruins of Israeli communities were still smoldering with the charred remains of families slaughtered by Hamas, you start seeing widespread claims of "genocide." That was a full two weeks before Israeli ground forces invaded Gaza. Meanwhile, Hamas actually did commit genocide on October 7. This was arguably the worst case of "Jews don't count" in modern history.
