On this day in 2005, the Israeli government instructed the IDF to begin disengagement from the Gaza Strip and the dismantling of settlements in the occupied land. Benjamin Netanyahu, at that time Israel's Minister of Finance, resigned from his position in protest of the move. After the removal of the 8,475 settlers, Israel tightened its political and economic control over Gaza and its inhabitants.
