I don't advocate "replacement." But the nature of ideas that *any* individual can adopt and strive up to it. "Heritage Americans" can reject the American idea (as many have), and foreigners who want to move to America can embrace the American idea (as many have).

The point is that you cannot sever the idea from the particular people. That’s the whole debate. You cannot replace the people with another people and salvage the idea. Individuals are not interchangeable. The browning of America is the loss of the idea.
