He came back and immediately placed a paid ad in New York Times saying we need to get out of NATO, that we’re paying too much. It was Russian talking points 101. At that moment, something happened in Trump’s brain. Whether it was kompromat, Trump’s unsophisticated nature, or Russians simply persuading him that he could do business in Russia and build a Trump Tower in Moscow, whether it was venality or kompromat, Trump changed, and he's never abandoned that view since 1987.
