My analytical assessment of the terrorist attack by Hamas or its affiliates on a GHF site that injured two U.S. personnel: Following the grenade attack on GHF personnel in Khan Younis, photographic evidence released by @GHFUpdates reveals a notable inscription: "Reb 130" on a fragment of grenade shrapnel. Upon review, this marking appears unlikely to be coincidental and may represent an intentional ideological message by the attackers, who are assessed to be affiliated with Hamas or an affiliated group. The inscription "Reb 130" may be a corrupted or hastily rendered reference to “Riba 130,” likely pointing to Surah Āl ‘Imrān (3:130) in the Qur’an: “O you who have believed, do not consume riba, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.” This verse is traditionally interpreted as a prohibition against riba which is commonly understood as usury, exploitative lending, or unequal economic exchange. If intentional, the inscription “Reb 130” may be intended to convey a dual-layered ideological warning: 1. The attackers may view the provision of humanitarian aid by GHF as a form of illegitimate exchange or “riba,” especially if they perceive recipients as risking their lives or loyalty in return for material assistance. In extremist theological frameworks, this could be seen as profiting off the suffering of Muslims, even if the aid is freely given. 2. The inscription may also serve as a religiously framed threat to Palestinian civilians: accepting aid from foreign or non-Islamist organizations constitutes complicity in a forbidden act. By invoking a Qur’anic prohibition, the attackers attempt to delegitimize GHF's operations and deter civilian engagement with humanitarian actors outside Hamas's authority. Relatedly, Hamas's Arrow Unit has carried out extrajudicial punishment on Palestinians who have engaged in riba. The group has posted multiple statement about punishing Palestinians for engaging in this alleged act. Of course, this is only one assessment of an inscription that could have other meanings behind it. It is also possible that the inscription doesn't mean anything. Nevertheless, the grenade attack at a GHF site is a serious incident and should be widely condemned. I suspect that Hamas and its affiliates will continue to undermine the GHF as long as the non-profit continues to operate.
