Part of me appreciates the romance of "real writing is an expression of humanity and can only be done by humans." AI can't be your pastor or your parent, and humanity cannot (and should not) try to alienate those parts that are "the image of God." Some things are "inalienable," as somebody wrote 250 years ago. But another part of me says the root of "no AI writing" is gatekeeping -- the unique identity of the essayist is built on them having a superior mind, education, or divine calling that lets them speak authoritatively. And they are scared that good writing and logic will become democratically available. While that will undermine the status of the priestly caste of essayists, it is also a tool that will help many. If that's a challenge to human authority, it's not necessarily a challenge to Divine authority. I'd like to see some good, human essays on how to separate these holy and unholy impulses.
