In Yevgenia Ginzburg's classic "Into the Whirlwind," she describes her own shock when she, a doctrinaire, Stalin-loving Bolshevik, is treated the way she was fine with having her political enemies treated. At least Ginzburg has the moral clarity to realize she and the whole system she supported had been morally rotten to treat anyone like this.
