It's not just the BBC. Since the Hamas takeover in 2007, media coverage inside Gaza has been a simulacrum of reality produced by "journalists" who fear Hamas, identify with Hamas, or belong to Hamas. This documentary (unpacked by @mishtal) is a good example of how it works
