This is well-put — politicians sometimes tell me things privately (usually that they agree with me about something) that are at odds with their public position, and I’m always flattered when someone reads me enough to know what to say but I try not to take it too seriously.

This is a consistent, bad weakness in political reporting: journalists who have conclusive evidence that a politician is lying tend to conclude the politician is telling THEM the truth.
