The more progressive General Drapatyi is a great choice for Ukraine’s new commander in chief, but if he does not have a like-minded counterpart as Defence Minister, the vested interests in the system will work against him. Now Syrsky is gone, what’s stopping President Zelensky from bringing back Fedorov as defence minister? I said from the outset I suspect his removal was more because he was fighting corruption in procurement than personal conflict. Fedorov is a challenge to big defence profiteers and the system of patronage Zelensky relies on. Acting minister Khmara is a war hero special operations commander, but I don’t believe he has the allies and expertise to take on that system.
