In the aftermath of 9/11, Department of Correction officers answered the call. They evacuated thousands of New Yorkers from Lower Manhattan, delivered critical supplies to Ground Zero, and helped search for survivors. Today, I was honored to join the DOC for its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, recognizing officers who responded that day and served our city for months afterwards—many of whom later fell ill and passed away from 9/11-related illnesses. Our city will forever be grateful for the work the DOC did to keep New Yorkers safe, to help us endure the impossible, and for the courage so many showed when they were needed the most.
