We also struggle with how and when to use ranks, who to rank against, etc — there's not a right answer! And I agree with you on low-education men, all the indicators point in the same way. But the 10-point decline in economic status among U.S. high-education men. What's happening with their wages? Ok they're losing ground against women, who previously were counted as zeros, and maybe against older workers whose earnings have gone up even more — but they're on the same earnings profile, so it's weird to count that as negative. My intuition is always against ranking men vs. women or ranking against people in different cohorts. The latter especially are not who you're measuring yourself against, for women I guess it depends.
