I’ve been having this fascinating argument with Joe Bot, who claims using AI in education is “feeding children to Moloch”. His responses seem to consist of uninspired attempts at insulting me, without even bothering to defend his position.

Not sure what a picture of me has to do with the fact that you’re claiming it’s literally evil to use AI to teach children. There are lots of kids who have had their lives improved by the technology already, and there are more every day. It’s an incredible opportunity to provide personal tutoring and support well beyond what we could afford as a society before. Benjamin Bloom posed a challenge to our society in his 1984 paper on mastery learning: students receiving individual instruction to mastery score higher than 98% of a control group of those receiving conventional group instruction to mastery. Unfortunately, even though the benefits are undeniable, it is simply infeasible to provide every student with individual tutors, or, at least it was up to now. So, here we have the most important development in decades in educational technology, one that has the potential to uplift millions of students, many of them in dysfunctional classroom environments, and you are calling it evil without even bothering to explain why. You have plenty of time to post completely artless insults, but none to discuss an important policy topic beyond acting as though posting a picture of me is somehow germane to the discussion.
