Dr. Michael VanElzakker, Co-Founder of PolyBio Research Foundation, recently discussed the biological basis of brain fog on Technology Networks’ Teach Me in 10 podcast. Explaining how peripheral infections, immune activation, and the central nervous system interact, VanElzakker said: “When [the vagus nerve] detects cytokines that are being produced locally to that infection… it sends a signal up your brain.” “Let’s say you have the flu or strep throat…. Very different pathogens, but it’s got this sort of shared response, that includes in it brain fog.”
