So far as I know, most of what we've seen has been human + AI to some degree. I'm told by mathematicians that the Erdos unit distance advance was quite educational. My understanding is that by following the logic of that disproof, human mathematicians then came up with a further advance on what the AI model had done. By weak analogy, in Go, the famous move 37 was mind blowing to human masters. But now humans understand it, and have gone on to devise new Go strategies that are novel and that are improvements on previous human craft.
