One of the blessings of serving in elected office is that I get to engage with Americans of all political backgrounds. What I see off these platforms gives me hope: while real disagreements exist - and while our politics can bring out the worst in all of us - we are not as divided as the algorithms make it seem. Most people are decent and kind. And we can tap people’s better angels if we allow ourselves to see them and if we are courageous enough to be close to one another. When we give up on each other, we give up on democracy.
