I know it doesn't seem like it because of the algorithm, but most people who do not agree with you on everything do not disagree with you on everything. The internet appears to collapse all thought into two diametrically opposed camps: people who either completely agree with you and people who seem to completely disagree with you. While many of those accounts are not even real people, even if they were, they are still not most people. Social media can impact real life but it is not representative of it. Trends online may be reflective of trends in real life, but the digital world erases the complexity and contradictions that most people embody in real life. Refusing to fall pray to the cynical and self-defeating doomerism about people is hard in our digital world, but it is necessary for progress and foundational for democracy. Neither are possible unless we maintain our faith in other people's capacity to change.
