He notes that the IDF now assesses there are several Hamas battalions in Rafah and Khan Younis, after the IDF and officials had said they were dismantled and defeated last year. A lot of military reporters in Israel are beginning to ask questions about what they were told last year and why most of these areas seem to still have Hamas brigades (weakened) and tunnels. Were the assessments wrong, overly rosy or did Hamas recruit or a bit of both. It’s worth recalling that the IDF assessed that most of Hamas was defeated in March 2024. A year later it still controls a little over half of Gaza.
