Ukraine has quietly clawed back ground around Lyman, while Russian milbloggers complain about commanders sending “beautiful reports” up the chain and Putin claims towns his forces simply do not control. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s OPSEC has become so effective that sometimes we only discover a counterattack when the gains become too big to hide. Last night’s conversation with Tom Mutch made me step back and look at the bigger picture, with the war certainly getting worse for Ukrainian civilians, but that should not be confused with Russia winning on the battlefield.
