Yesterday marked the 57th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Huế that began on January 31, 1968, during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. The battle lasted until March 2, 1968, making it one of the longest and bloodiest urban battles of the Vietnam War. North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong forces launched a surprise attack, seizing most of the city, including the historic Huế Citadel. U.S. Marines, South Vietnamese forces (ARVN), and U.S. Army units fought house-to-house to retake the city in intense combat. Read the @WarInstitute case study @JaysonGeroux and I wrote detailing the battle and its lessons.
