It’s that time of year again: when my students work together on a definition of the carceral state in our class. This year they really swung for the fences!

Carceral state = a tentacular 24/7/365 collection of interconnected bureaucratic institutions (eg, schools, healthcare, military/intelligence agencies, police), rules, and practices that extend the threat of incarceration throughout society where ever the power of the state is present and that systematically oversee deprivation of liberty of citizens and non-citizens with the effect of 
increasing the size of incarcerated populations in places where US racism and capitalism can reach.
