Observation on how social media is dumbing down politics: People don’t lose followers for posting nonsensical content on X so long as it supports the biases of their followers. People will lose followers for posting opinions that are contrary to the opinions of their followers, now matter how well reasoned. It happened on the right during the GOP primary, and it’s happening on the left in the wake of Biden’s debate performance. “Trump actually won California, and here is the proof!” = gain followers. “I don’t think the GOP should nominate Trump after seeing how the last three elections turned out”= lose followers. “CNN tampered with Biden’s audio feed to hurt him” = gain followers. “That debate was really bad for Biden and the polls are showing it” = lose followers. Pundits on both sides who are true ideological believers in their respective causes are responding way too much to this dynamic. Seems unideal.
