1) there are lots of people in the industry with connections to journalists. Pretty much everybody I know has at least one or two people at various journals in their DMs or imessage/signal. It is not surprising to me that someone would reach out to one of those journalist friends when they are considering doing a big thing like Jacob did here. 2) "this account had basically zero engagement beforehand, so an organic reach explanation seems unlikely." This screams that you don't know how the algorithm worked. The number of followers does not determine how far your post goes. It's a ratio of how many people see it and how many of them engage in some way. I happen to know for a fact that Jacob was followed by some of the most influential people in the space before this all happened. Because this post was so incentivizing to engage with, it is pretty obvious the algorithm would pick it up, similar to how it picked up your post here. The part about the anti-AI policy people that quote-tweeted in the first 15 minutes is admittedly a bit suspicious. It's probably the only suspicious thing here. I would suspect that these people were friends of his because the circle of AI safety folks is relatively small and it's not unlikely he was talking with them beforehand. The donation bit is stupid and weird to shove in here. I would imagine you could take any notable researcher in the space and say something similar because the circle is so small. Everyone's connected to everyone. 3) "in 2022, he got a $20,159 scholarship for the “long term future scholarship program”" So he was paid $20,000 in 2022, which led him to blow up hundreds of millions of dollars in equity. Are you insane? Do you really think somebody in the position of lead researcher at Anthropic would blow up their whole life over $20,000? Are you genuinely that broke? 4) "Basically every major Democrat politician and candidate has suddenly glommed on to this post" Yeah? Do you think people should just NOT talk about the fact that the thing holding up our economy could also destroy humanity? For what it's worth I haven't even seen a politician talk about this. I'm so in the SF bubble that I'm only seeing people in the research community talking about it. I only saw your post because somebody linked it to me as an example of the mental illness people are exposing when they conspirate about a post that seems incredibly genuine. Take this from Anthropic's number one hater: you are acting insane and you're making my life harder. I want to be able to complain about Anthropic, but people like you make it way harder because you spread this insane bullshit and it dilutes the real conversation.
