🚨 Angela Davis at Socialism 2026 Says It’s No Longer “Okay” to Say Someone Should Go to Prison and Argues Incarceration Is Why Gender Violence Persists Davis says the abolition movement has changed the left to the point where “we can now no longer act as if it’s okay to say somebody should be sent to prison.” She argues that society has made “so little progress” against gender violence because it continues to rely on incarceration, while warning against the internalized “carceral ideologies” that make retribution the default response to harm. Davis then stresses the need for “vigilance,” saying victories should be used as a “launching pad” to “deepen the struggle” and “broaden the struggle,” rather than as a point where activists declare the fight finished. She has to be thinking about 2020 here, though I imagine plenty of earlier moments from her decades of activism are flashing through her mind too.
