On September 10, 2025, the Israeli occupation’s attacks on the offices of Yemen’s 26 September and Al-Yemen newspapers in Sana’a killed 31 journalists and media workers and wounded 22 others, making the attack one of the deadliest single assaults on the press in 16 years, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). ￭ The aggressions hit multiple times around 4:45pm as staff at 26 September were preparing the weekly edition. A child accompanying a journalist was also killed. ￭ Speaking to CPJ, 26 September editor-in-chief Nasser Al-Khadri described the killings as an “unprecedented massacre of journalists.” ￭ Al-Khadri said: “It is a brutal and unjustified attack that targeted innocent people whose only crime was working in the media field, armed with nothing but their pens and words,” adding that many colleagues were reduced to body parts. ￭ The Israeli attacks destroyed the newspapers’ facilities, printing presses and archives, including the historic 26 September archive documenting Yemen’s history since the last century. ￭ Yemeni journalist Abdulrahman Mohammed Mutahar, who lives about 500 meters from the site, told CPJ the attack caused “massive explosions unlike anything Sanaa had seen since 2015.” He said around eight missiles reduced the Moral Guidance Directorate headquarters to rubble, leaving journalists’ bodies buried underneath. ￭ Nabil Al-Asidi, a board member of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, also told CPJ: “Targeting journalists aims to silence the truth.” ￭ The attack came amid Yemen’s resistance operations against Israel in solidarity with Palestine, while Israel said it had targeted “military targets.”
