If it was simply a matter of increasing social acceptance allowing people who to be who they always really were, the change would be uniform across age groups. If it was instead a function of troubled and impressionable young people being propagandized to buy into a societally approved and institutionally propagated trend, you would see young people vastly more likely to join.
