December 13 (today) marks 44 years since Poland's communist authorities imposed martial law, launching a sweeping crackdown aimed at the anti-communist Solidarity movement and dissidents. On 13 December 1981, communist general Wojciech Jaruzelski announced the imposition of martial law in a televised speech. An extraconstitutional military junta, the Military Council of National Salvation (WRON), was formed to rule Poland during the time.
