The decision by @potus to withhold weapons to Israel is the materialization of the defense establishment’s worst nightmare. This is nothing like the delays to the delivery of Hellfire missiles during the 2014 Gaza war, the delays to the delivery of F15s after the bombing of Osirak, or what happened in the First Lebanon War in the 1980s. Israel and the US have been on a collision course since the war began and unfortunately both sides are to blame. There is historic baggage from the Obama years, there is the judicial reform, there is the Iran deal and much more. Placing blame at this point though is less important since what has happened is the crossing of a red line that will allow future administrations to do much worse to Israel. Keep in mind that bombs are just one item on the list. If this administration or another were to decide one day to stop delivering spare parts to the Air Force, Israel will not be able to fly, let alone drop smart bombs. This is a wake up call for Israel the likes of the 1967 arms embargo by France. Creating more independence is probably the most important challenge this country will have to deal with in the years to come.
