Biden stayed in the race for so long out of self-interest. But those arguing that Democrats would have done better if he'd dropped out early and allowed a primary are implicitly arguing that the primary wouldn't have been won by Harris, his own VP, even as she would have been the instant frontrunner. And if you think she'd have lost the primary because she's really that poor a candidate, then you are left with some big questions as to why she was picked as the running mate to the 77-year-old Biden in the first place. Put another way, the people saying that the lack of a primary was the issue are really suggesting, but not openly acknowledging, that the party's decision-making problems run much deeper than what day Biden decided to go.
