Chongqing student dies after suspected bullying; school refuses to release surveillance footage (2026.08.31–09.09) On August 31, Ran Siqi, a new student at Youyang No. 1 Middle School in Chongqing, was found collapsed near a school restroom on the second day after enrolling and was later confirmed dead. According to his family, after Ran went missing, the school refused to show them the relevant footage, claiming the surveillance system was "under repair." After his body was found, the school sent it to a funeral home without the family's consent, and initially refused when the family asked to view it. Ran's mother said that when the family finally saw the body, his left hand was broken and he had multiple wounds, scratches, and bruises, along with two thumb-sized marks on his face, leading them to suspect he had been bullied at school. The family also said autopsy personnel mentioned that Ran might have died from a fall, but added that they could not say so with confidence. As of September 9, the school had yet to offer a convincing explanation for the full sequence of events from Ran's disappearance to his death, the missing footage, the injuries on his body, or the unauthorized transfer of his remains. On September 3, another student died suddenly on campus at Xuqiao Middle School in Taihu County, Anqing, Anhui. According to the student's family, the school likewise refused to provide surveillance footage. Note: the Chinese text doesn't specify Ran Siqi's gender; I've used "he/his" based on the name. Change to "she/her" if that's incorrect.
