The problems with the Effective Altruism cult cannot be fixed. It is based on radical utilitarianism for one thing, which bakes in “the ends justify the means” right at the heart of it. (It is fascinating that they admit that people are now hiding that they are EAs.)

Center for Effective Altruism: We want to improve the EA brand, so Effective Altruists will not need to hide their association. Effective Altruist in response: Yeah, how about starting with better postmorteming and transparency on what went wrong with FTX? Communication professional: Dear EAs, "one of the largest financial frauds of all time" isn't a reputational "brand sentiment" issue. It's a "we helped create the FTX scandal" issue. Instead of brand management ("improving the EA brand"), fix the fundamental flaws. A good place to start: the "end justifies the means" mentality.
